Italian sensation Kimi Antonelli surged to the top of the Formula 1 driver standings after a commanding victory at the Japanese Grand Prix. Starting from pole position, the young Mercedes driver maintained a flawless pace to secure his second career win. His performance in Suzuka has solidified his status as a title favorite in just his debut season.
While Antonelli celebrated, defending champion Max Verstappen and the Red Bull team continued to struggle with the 2026 technical regulations. Verstappen managed only a sixth-place finish, trailing significantly behind the lead pack. Red Bull officials have admitted they are "one second off" the leaders and plan to use the upcoming three-week break to overhaul their car's data and simulator performance.
The race also saw a strong podium finish for Charles Leclerc, who battled through the field to secure his second podium in three races. Meanwhile, McLaren's Oscar Piastri suffered another difficult weekend, failing to score points after a series of technical issues. The F1 circus now heads to the Miami Grand Prix on May 3rd.
