In response to the severe economic fallout from the Middle East conflict, the South Korean government announced today that it will begin rolling out a massive 26.2 trillion won ($19.5 billion) extra budget bill. A central part of this package is a 6.1 trillion won cash assistance program aimed at supporting the bottom 70 percent of income earners who are struggling with surging oil prices.

Approximately 32.5 million people are eligible for this aid, with payments ranging from 100,000 won to 600,000 won per person, depending on their income level and region. The first round of payments will reach the most vulnerable citizens starting April 27, with the broader eligible group receiving funds by May 18. These funds will be distributed via debit cards or regional gift cards and must be spent by August 31, 2026.

This financial intervention comes as gas prices in Seoul and other major cities continue to climb, putting immense strain on household budgets. The Korean government hopes that this direct injection of cash will stabilize domestic demand while global energy markets remain volatile.
