Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for a shift in focus toward the country's economic well-being, specifically urging politicians to stop internal bickering. His message follows growing pressure to act against Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli over recent policy disputes. Anwar emphasized that addressing the current "crisis" phase of the economy driven by global energy volatility is more important than political spectatorship.
The government has also issued a stern warning to corporations and industries to stop "channel switching" activities, where businesses discreetly buy subsidised fuel at pump prices instead of market rates. Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan noted that market prices for diesel are significantly higher than the RM6.72 per litre at petrol stations, and strict enforcement will follow for violators.
Despite these pressures, Anwar announced that one of seven Malaysian ships previously stranded in the Strait of Hormuz has safely passed through and is heading home. This development is expected to help stabilise the domestic oil supply for April and May, though the government warns that extra oil revenue still cannot fully offset current subsidy costs.
