The Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) has submitted a proposal to the government to replace the wooden track at the Velodrom Rakyat in Ipoh with a modern aluminium surface. The suggestion came from National Cycling Technical Director John Beasley, who argued that an aluminium track is far more durable and resistant to Malaysia's unpredictable weather compared to traditional timber.

According to Beasley, an aluminium track would eliminate the immediate need for a costly roof structure, providing a long term, cost effective solution for the historic venue. This upgrade would revitalize Malaysia's first ever velodrome and help ease the heavy training load currently placed on the National Velodrome in Nilai. The MNCF believes that restoring the Ipoh facility is crucial for the development of grassroots cycling talent in the northern region.

The proposal is currently under review by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. If approved, the project would represent a significant shift in how Malaysia maintains its sporting infrastructure, moving toward materials that require less maintenance in tropical climates. This modernization is seen as a key step in ensuring that local cyclists have access to high quality training facilities year round.
