The Ministry of Home Affairs has officially unveiled plans for a new MyKad model designed to be nearly impossible to forge or tamper with. This upgraded national identity card will incorporate 53 advanced security elements, including enhanced holographic features, laser-engraved data, and a more robust internal chip. The government stated that this move is a direct response to the rising cases of identity theft and the use of sophisticated fake IDs by criminal syndicates.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail clarified that while the new cards will be introduced in phases, the current MyKad remains valid for all transactions and travel. The transition is expected to begin for new applicants and those replacing lost cards by the end of the year. This initiative is part of a broader "Digital Malaysia" roadmap to ensure that the national ID system can serve as a secure gateway for both physical and digital government services.
Technological experts have praised the move, noting that the inclusion of biometric and cryptographic upgrades brings Malaysia’s identification system up to the highest international standards. The government is also looking into integrating the new MyKad with the upcoming National Digital Identity (IDN) framework. This will allow citizens to perform secure online verifications without the need for multiple passwords, significantly streamlining the process for banking, healthcare, and social assistance applications.
