A terrifying vehicle ramming and stabbing incident unfolded on a busy shopping street in the northern Italian city center of Modena on Saturday afternoon. A 31 year old driver identified as Salim El Khoudri deliberately drove his vehicle at high speed onto a sidewalk, plowing indiscriminately into a crowd of pedestrians before finally crashing head on into a shop window. The violent rampage resulted in at least eight casualties, leaving four people in critical condition with two women suffering severe leg amputations. 

Immediately following the crash, the suspect exited the vehicle brandishing a knife and attempted to flee the scene on foot. A heroic group of four bystanders including two Egyptian nationals courageously gave chase, cornered the attacker, and successfully tackled him to the ground despite one passerby sustaining a slight knife wound. Police arrived promptly to take the suspect into custody. Local officials and Modena's Mayor Massimo Mezzetti praised the brave citizens as icons of communal solidarity.

Italian investigators and Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi have officially ruled out terrorism, attributing the deliberate attack to severe "psychiatric distress". El Khoudri, an economics graduate born in Bergamo to a family of Moroccan heritage, had a documented medical history of schizoid disorders and was treated at local mental health clinics between 2022 and 2024 before disappearing from the care facility's radar. In a show of national support, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and President Sergio Mattarella canceled external travel plans to personally visit the severely injured victims at local hospitals.
