PETALING JAYA: Thai police arrested a 20-year-old Malaysian man and seized 166kg of crystal methamphetamine worth more than RM8 million in Hua Hin last Saturday.

A Thai security spokesman said police intercepted a white BMW suspected of transporting drugs from Bangkok to southern Thailand after receiving information about a vehicle carrying a large quantity of drugs, reported Berita Harian.

He said the car tried to evade a roadblock at about 12.30am but police pursued the vehicle and later stopped it outside a convenience store.

The driver was arrested after several suitcases were found inside the vehicle. The suspect allegedly told police the suitcases were not his and he did not know the combination to open them.

Police later inspected the vehicle and suitcases with the suspect’s consent and discovered 166kg of crystal methamphetamine. They also seized the car.

The spokesman said the seizure followed an investigation into a drug trafficking network suspected of using Hua Hin as a transit point for transporting drugs to southern Thailand.

Police found that the drugs were not intended for distribution in Hua Hin but were believed to have been destined for Hatyai and three provinces in southern Thailand.

The shipment was allegedly ordered by a Chinese national based in Bangkok who is involved in illegal business activities and had instructed couriers to deliver the drugs to designated locations.
