PUTRAJAYA: The road transport department (JPJ) is replacing its automated awareness safety system (AWAS) cameras in phases at gazetted locations, JPJ director-general Aedy Fadly Ramli said today.

In a statement, Aedy announced that the upgrade would be in line with the latest advancements in automated number plate recognition technology to ensure better detection.

The replacement involves Redflex camera models that need to be changed due to significant damage and lack of support from the principal, he said.

He said AWAS cameras were in place to enforce laws for speeding and traffic light violations under the Road Transport Act 1987, and to reduce crash statistics.

Therefore, he said, all road users must comply with the law and be tolerant of other road users for the safety of themselves and their families.

This department is also committed to ensuring that the safety and well-being of road users is always maintained, and remains at the highest level, he said.
