Penang Flash Floods Trigger Hours-Long Traffic Chaos and Major Delays

Heavy rain early yesterday morning led to flash floods across Penang Island, causing significant traffic disruptions and leaving many commuters stranded for hours.

The downpour, which began around 5:50 a.m., resulted in severe flooding in several areas, particularly affecting Bayan Baru. Major traffic jams ensued as roads such as Jalan Tun Dr Awang, Jalan Datuk Ismail Hashim, and Jalan Mayang Pasir were inundated, with overflowing drains exacerbating the situation

State Infrastructure and Transport Committee Chairman Zairil Khir Johari explained that the existing drainage systems were overwhelmed by the volume of water, and the Relau River also breached its banks.

Factory worker Nellie Chin recounted being trapped in traffic on Jalan Mahsuri for over two hours, only reaching her office around 10:20 a.m. Many of her colleagues also faced delays due to the traffic congestion, which she described as "horrible."

In response to the flash floods, Seri Delima Assemblyman Connie Tan addressed a case of soil erosion that severely damaged a kitchen in a house on Pintasan Pemancar, Gelugor. Immediate measures were taken, including closing off the affected area and clearing debris. Tan also visited the resident’s home and promised to provide assistance, including temporary accommodation for the displaced family

On a positive note, the recent rains have improved water levels at the Air Itam and Teluk Bahang dams. As of 4:30 p.m. yesterday, the dams' levels were at 31.2% and 25.8%, respectively, up from 27.6% and 25.2% on August 20.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) had predicted thunderstorms and heavy rain for Perlis, Kedah, Penang, and northern Perak from September 2 to 7.
