GOMBAK, Oct 16 — Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari addressed the landslide in Taman Melawati, asserting that it was not due to over-development but rather clogged drains and maintenance issues. He noted that planning permissions in the area were last issued over a decade ago and the development was primarily low-density bungalow lots.*
The landslide, which occurred around 10 AM following heavy rainfall, affected four houses on Jalan E, prompting evacuations. Amirudin emphasized the need for local authorities to engage landowners to mitigate such risks and stated that while immediate search and rescue operations were ongoing, responsibility for maintenance lies with the private developers.
He explained that the drainage was clogged with rocks and soil, leading to overflow, exacerbated by ongoing development work higher up the slope. Amirudin also indicated that the affected land plot recently changed ownership, with no new planning permissions yet issued. While compensation for affected residents would be pursued through private landowners, he urged developers to take proactive measures to prevent future incidents.
The Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) has been directed to act swiftly on these issues, as Amirudin called for shared responsibility among all parties involved in maintaining safety in the high-risk area.
