KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 8 —* The Malaysian government has prepared a backup plan for its peacekeepers in southern Lebanon amid rising tensions and potential withdrawal of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) due to Israeli aggression.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin emphasized Malaysia's ongoing commitment to UN peacekeeping efforts, similar to when the Malaysian Battalion (MALBATT) was first deployed. He stated that the ministry maintains close communication with UNIFIL and other contributing nations about the situation on the ground.
Khaled noted that not only MALBATT but also peacekeeping teams from Indonesia and Ireland are facing threats. He assured that the deployed soldiers are well-trained and prepared for the risks involved.
Recently, six MALBATT members were injured in an explosion near Saida Stadium while traveling from Beirut to Camp Marakah. One soldier is receiving treatment at Hamood Hospital, while the others, with minor injuries, have safely reached their destination. The explosion's cause is still under investigation, as it may have resulted from a drone or airstrike.
The deployment of MALBATT team 850-12, comprising 220 personnel, is part of a phased operation that began on November 6 and will continue until November 18.
