PM Anwar: Malaysia-Singapore Johor Economic Zone Deal Likely Delayed to January Due to COVID-19"
KUALA LUMPUR — The signing of a deal between Malaysia and Singapore to establish a special economic zone (SEZ) in Johor is expected to be postponed to January, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed today.
Originally scheduled for December 9 during the annual leaders' retreat, the signing was delayed after Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong tested positive for Covid-19 this week. Wong, who is currently self-isolating, made the announcement on social media.
The two nations agreed earlier this year to develop the SEZ in Johor, aiming to boost investment and facilitate the movement of goods and people. The proposal includes a passport-free immigration system, renewable energy collaboration, and streamlined business processes.
