Comedian Cancels 'Raygun' Musical After Legal Threat from Breakdancer's Team
SYDNEY — Australian comedian Steph Broadbridge has cancelled her upcoming musical "Raygun: The Musical," which was set to open in Sydney, following a legal threat from the lawyers of breakdancer Rachael "Raygun" Gunn.
The musical, inspired by Gunn's infamous breakdancing performance at the Paris Olympics, was meant to feature dance moves from the 37-year-old Olympian, whose routine, including kangaroo hops and a sprinkler imitation, became a global joke. The performance was widely mocked online and on late-night shows, leading Gunn's legal team to argue that the show could harm her reputation.
In a social media message, Broadbridge revealed that Gunn's lawyers contacted the venue, claiming that she was damaging the dancer's brand. They also insisted she could not perform the "kangaroo dance," which they argued Gunn "owns."
Confused by the claim, Broadbridge joked that she lacked formal breakdancing training to perform the moves. She said she would reschedule the performance and alter the musical's title to include an "i" in "Raygun" to avoid further legal issues.
Despite the controversy, Gunn received support from fellow athletes and even Australia's Prime Minister, although she announced her retirement earlier this year, citing the "really upsetting" backlash. Her management, Born Bred Talent, emphasized the importance of protecting Gunn's creative rights and brand image.
