KUALA LUMPUR — KK Mart has blamed its supplier, Shake and Bake Cafe Sdn Bhd, for misusing the halal logo on a “ham and cheese sandwich” sold by the convenience chain. Religious authorities found that the sandwich was falsely labeled with the halal certification. KK Mart has filed a police report against the supplier and is considering legal action.

The Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim), in collaboration with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN), conducted an inspection after online complaints. Jakim confirmed that the product lacked Malaysian Halal Certification, and the supplier was not a registered SPHM certificate holder. As a result, the unauthorized use of the halal logo violates the Trade Descriptions Act 2011, and legal action is underway.

Earlier, Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh criticized KK Mart for misleading consumers and called on Jakim to clarify whether the sandwich was truly halal.
