PARIS — Formula One drivers could face fines or points deductions under new FIA guidelines aimed at punishing swearing and other forms of misconduct. The updated rules, which have been met with criticism from drivers like Max Verstappen, define misconduct as offensive language, gestures, or actions that cause offence or humiliation.
The FIA’s new sanctions range from fines of 10,000 to 15,000 euros for a first offence, increasing with repeated violations. For F1 drivers, fines will be quadrupled, while those in rally (WRC) or endurance (WEC) racing will face triple fines, and regional championship participants will see double fines.
Last season, Verstappen was ordered to do community service for swearing, and Charles Leclerc was fined 10,000 euros for a similar incident. Many drivers have expressed dissatisfaction with the new measures, including an open letter criticizing the tone and language used by FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
The 2024 Formula One season kicks off on March 16 with the Australian Grand Prix.
