Penang Prepares for 2.4 Million Vehicles as CNY Traffic Peaks

GEORGE TOWN — Penang police are bracing for over 2.4 million vehicles to enter the state during this year's Chinese New Year holidays. On average, 200,000 vehicles are expected daily, with the volume peaking as the celebrations approach on January 29.

Police have identified eight “blackspot” areas prone to accidents, including Jalan Air Itam, Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, and several key roads in Seberang Perai. Officers will be stationed at these spots and other high-traffic areas to manage the flow of vehicles.

The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has launched its “Ops Cuti Sekolah” operation to control traffic at popular tourist destinations and congestion hotspots. Initiatives like “Ops Payung” and the use of closed-circuit cameras will help monitor and manage traffic, with a 24-hour team on standby to address any issues.

MBPP has also closed certain roads, like the entry lane from Lebuh Light to Jalan Padang Kota Lama, to ease traffic. Patrols are being conducted alongside the police and the Road Transport Department at areas likely to experience congestion, such as Gurney Drive, Komtar, and Queensbay Mall.
