KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's challenge at the German Open ended on Friday, marking the nation's worst performance in nine years at the Super 300 tournament.

The exit came following the elimination of Wan Arif Junaidi-Yap Roy King and Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing in the men's and women's doubles quarter-finals, respectively.

Third seeds Arif-Roy King failed to counter the superior South Korean duo Seo Seung Jae-Kim Won Ho, falling 21-16, 21-16 without holding a lead throughout their 38-minute encounter.

It was their second consecutive defeat to the newly-formed but in-form Korean pair, having also lost to them in the first round of the Malaysia Open.

Seung Jae-Won Ho will be aiming for another successful outing in Mulheim. In 2023, Won Ho claimed the title with former partner Choi Sol Gyu, defeating Seung Jae and his then World Championships-winning partner Kang Min Hyuk in an all-Korean final.

Meanwhile, Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing received a harsh reality check with a comprehensive 21-9, 21-13 defeat to Japan's world No. 63 Mizuki Otake-Miyu Takahashi.

This disappointing result came just a day after their stunning upset of China's fifth seeds Chen Qing Chen-Wang Ting Ge, a formidable combination of Olympic and world junior champions.

Malaysia's quarter-final elimination means the nation will not be represented in the semi-finals for the first time since 2016.

Between 2017 and 2024, Malaysia consistently had at least one pair in the German Open semi-finals, producing two champions – Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie (mixed doubles, 2018) and Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani (men's doubles, 2022).
