PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has described the proposal to limit the prime minister's tenure to 10 years as a step towards ensuring the continuity of clean governance and a more structured administrative system.
During the Prime Minister's Office daily briefing today, senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah said Anwar also viewed the proposal as a measure to prevent the centralisation of power, which could create opportunities for corruption and abuse.
"Regarding the proposal to limit the prime minister's tenure to a maximum of 10 years, the prime minister said it aligns with his vision and the reform policy framework outlined in the Membangun Negara Madani initiative, as it is not a new concept.
"This measure aims to ensure the continuity of clean governance, a more structured system and to prevent the concentration of power, which could lead to corruption and abuse.
"In fact, several countries, including our neighbour, Indonesia, have already implemented this approach."
Tunku Nashrul added that Anwar said limiting a leader's tenure takes into account the current and future geopolitical landscape, which requires the commitment of all parties to allow for fresh leadership and the emergence of a new generation of leaders.
