KLUANG: The Education Ministry (MOE) has allowed students affected by floods to attend school without uniforms.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the flexibility aims to ensure students can continue their education without adding to their parents' burden.

"Some children attended lessons at the temporary evacuation centres (PPS) without uniforms because they had no time to bring them when evacuating," she said.

She added that continuous rain may prevent uniforms from drying in time.

"Therefore, students are allowed to attend school without uniforms, but their attire must still be appropriate," she said at a press conference after visiting the SK Kencana PPS in Simpang Renggam today.

Also present were state executive councillor for information and education Aznan Tamin and Education director-general Datuk Azman Adnan.

Fadhlina said the MOE is also taking steps to ensure the safety of teachers affected by the floods.

The ministry has directed the Johor State Education Department to monitor the situation of teachers working and living in flood-affected areas.

"Yesterday, we received a complaint about a teacher stranded at the school due to flooding," she said.

Earlier, 39 victims, including teachers and female students from SK Tampoi Utama, had to be relocated to a PPS early today morning after being stranded for more than 10 hours due to flooding.

It was reported that all the victims, including a pregnant teacher, initially refused to leave the school premises after the midday session yesterday due to safety concerns.
