In Sri Lanka, a special police unit known as the “commando farmers” is combating rising soil salinity caused by climate change that is ruining traditional rice farms along the coast. Using a climate-resilient farming method called sorjan, they are restoring salty lands with coconut trees and salt-tolerant crops to boost food security. With nearly 8% of Sri Lanka’s farmland affected, this innovative effort aims to protect livelihoods and sustain agricultural productivity despite increasing saltwater intrusion.
