A survey of over 40,000 Malaysian SPayLater users found that 81% rely on the Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) service for financial emergencies, including essentials. The study also revealed that 59% consider such credit essential for modern spending, and 63% no longer need risky informal lending. Many Malaysians (12%) feel underserved by traditional banks, and 55% lack access to other credit. Users primarily utilize BNPL for cash flow management (57%) and bridging budget gaps (46%), with emergency spending accounting for 32%. Responsible usage is high, with 93% pre-planning repayments, and 89% reporting improved financial management. These trends align with a national decline in BNPL delinquency rates.
