The RM40 million Perak Elephant Sanctuary at Jalan Raya Timur-Barat (JRTB) is projected to be fully completed by 2030, though it could begin operating by 2028, according to Perak Perhilitan director Yusoff Shariff. The project, submitted to the Economy Ministry on May 6, aims to reduce human-elephant conflicts in the area by 50%. This initiative comes after 4,919 complaints and RM39.4 million in property losses due to such conflicts between 2020 and 2024. While a 200-meter wildlife crossing built in 2015 has been somewhat helpful, Yusoff emphasized that a sanctuary would offer greater safety for both elephants and road users along the JRTB. More wildlife crossings might be built if funding is allocated.
