The United Nations may cut up to 20% of jobs in its Secretariat as part of a sweeping 2026 budget reform, according to an internal memo. UN Controller Chandramouli Ramanathan said the move is part of Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ push to reduce the regular budget by 15–20%.
The Secretariat, employing around 35,000 staff globally, has been asked to identify non-critical or redundant roles by June 13. This effort is part of the broader “UN 80” reform initiative, aimed at streamlining operations amid ongoing financial strain.
