Using old songs has become a trend for filmmakers to attract audiences, with many choosing Ilaiyaraaja’s hits. However, questions arise when songs are used without proper permission. Usually, producers get approval and pay the rights holders before using songs. But Ilaiyaraaja is different. He reportedly refuses to grant rights even if producers get permission elsewhere. When the film Manjumal Boys used his music, he is said to have charged between 60 to 80 lakh rupees. It’s believed Ilaiyaraaja, enjoying this control, pressures producers for hefty fees. Though the issue isn’t public, legal actions are reportedly underway behind the scenes, says popular commentator Bismi.
