IPOH — Authorities are investigating a belacan (shrimp paste) factory in Bagan Datuk after thousands of dead fish were found in drains near Kampung Sungai Payung and Kampung Sungai Tiang Baroh on June 10.
The Perak Department of Environment (DOE) seized a boiler from the factory, suspected of releasing untreated wastewater into nearby drains and rivers. Reddish stains found beneath the boiler suggest it may have caused the pollution.
State Environment Committee chairman Teh Kok Lim said the case is being investigated under Section 38(1) of the Environmental Quality Act (Amendment) 2024.
