Three Malaysian men aged 24, 30, and 40 were arrested in Singapore on June 10 for allegedly evading cigarette and GST taxes. Authorities caught them transferring brown boxes between two Malaysian-registered vehicles parked roadside. Upon inspection, officers found 7,400 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes in a trailer and another 100 cartons in a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV). Both vehicles and the cigarettes were seized. The 30-year-old suspect reportedly smuggled the cigarettes from Malaysia, hiding them among coffee product boxes, while the 24-year-old helped transfer the goods, and the 40-year-old was to distribute them in Singapore. All three were believed to be hired by unknown individuals in Malaysia. Under Singapore’s Customs and GST laws, buying, selling, transporting, or storing duty-unpaid goods is a serious offense, punishable by heavy fines up to 40 times the tax evaded, imprisonment, and vehicle forfeiture.
