Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urged Asean to remain committed to engaging Myanmar despite challenges, calling it “shameful” if the bloc avoids its responsibility to help end the civil unrest.As current Asean chair, Malaysia is closely monitoring the crisis, pushing for a ceasefire, humanitarian access, and inclusive dialogue between the junta and the ousted government.Anwar stressed that although peace is not guaranteed, persistent efforts and clear messaging are crucial. He warned that Myanmar is facing collapse, with rising poverty and instability spilling into neighboring countries like Malaysia, Thailand, and Bangladesh through the Rohingya refugee crisis.He welcomed international involvement in peace talks and highlighted Malaysia’s role in brokering a fragile ceasefire in April after a deadly earthquake.
