Malaysia’s Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has taken civil action against two Telegram channels — “Edisi Siasat” and “Edisi Khas” — for allegedly spreading content that violates the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, potentially undermining public trust and order.
MCMC said this is the first legal move against a social media provider licensed under ASP(C), following Telegram’s repeated failure to act on reported violations despite multiple negotiations.
As a last resort, MCMC secured an interim High Court injunction to block and prevent further sharing of the harmful content. Telegram will still have the opportunity to defend itself in court.
The commission reminded all platform providers of their responsibility to regulate content on their platforms to protect public interest and uphold the law.
