Yashasvi Jaiswal called his century “very special” after leading India to a dominant 359-3 on Day 1 of the first Test against England at Headingley. He and new captain Shubman Gill, who remained unbeaten on 127, punished England’s bowlers after being put in to bat.
Jaiswal, proud of his effort, praised Gill’s calm leadership in his first innings as Test skipper. Former England captain Michael Vaughan was shocked by Ben Stokes' decision to bowl first, calling it “staggering,” especially under sunny conditions at a traditionally batting-friendly Leeds.
Despite recent trends favoring the team bowling first at Headingley, Vaughan insisted England missed a chance, citing their stronger batting lineup and inexperienced bowling attack. He also warned about the threat of Jasprit Bumrah when India takes the field.
England bowling coach Tim Southee admitted it was a tough day, acknowledging India’s strong batting and saying not every toss decision pays off.
