Japan canceled its July 1 security talks with the US after Washington demanded it raise defence spending to 3.5% of GDP, up from an earlier 3% request. The move follows pressure from the Trump administration for Japan and other allies to increase military budgets amid tensions with China. The cancellation also relates to Japan’s upcoming elections.
