KUALA LUMPUR — With the expanded Sales and Service Tax (SST) set to take effect on July 1, 2025, prices of imported fruits — except apples and oranges — are expected to rise, making them less affordable for many Malaysians.

As imported options like berries, grapes, and cherries become more expensive, nutritionists suggest turning to local fruits, which are often richer in nutrients and fresher due to shorter supply chains.

Local fruits that shine:

Guava vs Apple: Guava packs more fibre and over 200mg of vitamin C per 100g — far higher than apples.

Mangosteen vs Blueberries: Mangosteen rivals blueberries in antioxidants and adds anti-inflammatory benefits.

Langsat vs Grapes: Langsat contains essential B vitamins in addition to antioxidants.

Rambutan vs Strawberries: Rambutan offers vitamin C, A, and a mix of vital minerals.

Papaya vs Orange: Papaya delivers more vitamin C than oranges.

While imported fruits may seem more premium due to branding and price, they often undergo treatments like waxing and freezing during long transits, which can reduce freshness and nutritional value.

In contrast, Malaysian fruits are picked ripe and delivered fresh, making them a healthier, tastier, and more budget-friendly choice.
