JOHOR BARU — Over 209,000 Singapore-registered vehicles have activated their RFID tags ahead of full Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) enforcement at Malaysia-Singapore border checkpoints, according to the Road Transport Department (JPJ).
Out of 280,000 registered vehicles, 206,088 are privately owned and 3,765 are company vehicles. However, 42,416 vehicles have yet to activate their tags.
JPJ has deployed 55 personnel across Johor for VEP enforcement, with plans to expand operations to other states. Under Section 66H(7) of the Road Transport Act, it’s an offence to drive a foreign vehicle in Malaysia without a valid VEP, and violators face a RM300 fine.
Unregistered vehicles won’t be stopped at entry points to avoid traffic, but drivers will face issues when exiting Malaysia if the VEP is inactive or fines remain unpaid.
Mobile VEP units and counters at Danga Bay and JPJ offices are available to help drivers settle fines and activate permits. JPJ warned that no further excuses will be accepted, as the VEP system has been in place for seven years.
