GEORGE TOWN — The MCMC, in collaboration with the Malaysian Highway Authority, will expand internet coverage along highways under the “Where there’s a road, there’s internet” initiative, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
About 50km of highway routes lacking connectivity have been identified. The initiative aims to cover remote roads previously overlooked, including black spots like Tanjung Asam, where poor signal once hampered emergency response.
Fahmi launched a new YTL Communications MOCN base station in Tanjung Asam, one of five nationwide, allowing multiple telcos to share a single tower under the Network Infrastructure Sharing Framework.
More towers are planned in Penang and other states, while coastal areas may soon benefit from satellite-based internet, with a proof of concept expected by late 2025.
