KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia recorded over 3.14 million road accidents from 2019 to 2024, averaging about 1,720 crashes per day, according to police data.
Bukit Aman traffic chief Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said poor driving habits—like using phones behind the wheel, negligence at junctions, and failing to notice other vehicles—are the main causes.
He also noted the rising number of registered vehicles, now at 36.63 million, may contribute to the growing accident trend, though factors like road conditions and traffic law compliance also matter.
Despite the surge in total accidents, fatal cases have dropped due to strict enforcement, including recent operations like Ops Lancar, which saw fatalities during Aidiladha fall from 84 to 58.
