JAKARTA — At least six people, including a three-year-old boy, died and 30 remain missing after a ferry capsized in rough seas en route to Bali from Java late Wednesday night. Authorities said 29 survivors have been rescued so far.

Survivors described the ferry tilting and sinking quickly, with waves up to 2.5 metres hampering rescue efforts. The vessel carried 65 passengers and crew, along with 22 vehicles.

President Prabowo ordered an immediate response as search teams, boats, and a helicopter comb the waters. Operations paused Thursday night and will resume Friday.

Ferry accidents are frequent in Indonesia due to lax safety and bad weather, with this busy Java-Bali crossing seeing heavy daily traffic.
