Heavy rain battered South Korea for a third straight day, forcing over 5,000 people into shelters and leaving at least four dead, the safety ministry said Friday.

Record rainfall of over 400mm hit southern areas like Gwangju in 24 hours, while warnings for flooding and landslides remain in place through Saturday. Victims include two trapped in cars, one in a flooded basement, and another killed when a roadside wall collapsed in Osan.

President Lee Jae Myung is set to chair an emergency meeting to coordinate disaster response efforts.
