Australia has lifted longstanding trade barriers on US beef following pressure from former President Donald Trump, who threatened 10% tariffs on Australian meat exports. The ban had blocked US beef from cattle born in Canada or Mexico due to biosecurity concerns.

Australia’s agriculture minister said new US quality controls now meet safety standards. The move eases tensions after Trump accused Australia of unfair trade, despite it exporting large volumes of meat to the US.

The original ban stemmed from mad cow disease concerns in 2003, with most restrictions lifted by 2019—until now. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had criticized Trump's tariffs as hostile, calling them “totally unwarranted.”
