Five Iranian nationals, including three men and two women, faced multiple charges in Penang Magistrates’ Courts. Among the accused, Tarfi Ghader, 33, pleaded not guilty to stealing RM400 from a foreign tourist at a convenience store and US$260 from another tourist at Gurney Drive. All five also faced charges of possessing 5 grams of cannabis at an apartment in Batu Ferringhi. Additionally, they were charged with overstaying in Malaysia. The theft charges fall under Section 379 of the Penal Code, which carries up to seven years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction. The case highlights ongoing efforts by Malaysian authorities to clamp down on crimes affecting tourists and drug-related offenses.
