The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has fined Sin Chew Media Corporation Berhad and Sinar Karangkraf Sdn Bhd RM100,000 each following approval from the Attorney General’s Chambers. Sin Chew was penalised for publishing an incomplete illustration of the Malaysian flag on its digital platform, while Sinar Karangkraf was fined for sharing false information about the inspector-general of police on its official Instagram account, related to political leadership claims. Both cases were investigated under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, with penalties issued under Section 233(2). The fines reflect the government’s stance on maintaining accuracy and respect in media representations.
