Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today launched a RM5 billion national initiative aimed at enhancing digital literacy among rural communities. The program will provide high-speed internet access and free tablet devices to over 500,000 students in B40 families. The PM stated that bridging the digital divide is essential for Malaysia’s transition into a high-income tech nation.
The initiative also includes the establishment of "Digital Community Hubs" in every district, where citizens can receive training in AI, coding, and e-commerce. These hubs will be staffed by local tech graduates, providing them with employment while serving their communities. The government hopes this will decentralize the tech industry, allowing rural entrepreneurs to compete on a global scale.
Furthermore, a significant portion of the fund is dedicated to cybersecurity education to protect citizens from the rise of digital scams. The Ministry of Communications aims to train one million Malaysians in basic online safety protocols by 2027. This holistic approach to digitalization is expected to modernize the workforce and protect the nation's rapidly growing digital economy from external threats.
