In a historic move for state autonomy, the Malaysian Federal Government has agreed in principle to hand over Bintulu Port to the Sarawak State Government for a value of RM1.8 billion. Transport Minister Anthony Loke confirmed in Parliament today that the legal process is in its final stages.
This takeover is part of the ongoing fulfillment of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), giving Sarawak greater control over its strategic maritime assets. A technical committee is currently refining the final legal aspects to ensure a smooth transition of management and regulation.
The move is expected to boost Sarawak’s economy by allowing the state to integrate port operations with its industrial development plans. Sarawak Premier Abang Johari has welcomed the decision, stating it will turn Bintulu into a major maritime hub for the region.
