The Sarawak state government has released an updated financial report indicating a significant increase in the projected costs for co-hosting the 2027 SEA Games. Minister Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah revealed today that the initial allocation of RM350 million is no longer sufficient to cover the extensive infrastructure requirements. The rise in costs is attributed to the need for advanced sporting technology and a total overhaul of aging facilities.

The iconic Sarawak Stadium, which is nearly 30 years old, requires a multi-million ringgit refurbishment to meet international Olympic-standard requirements. Additionally, the construction of the new High-Performance Sports Centre and upgrades to aquatic venues have added to the budgetary pressure. The state is currently in talks with the Federal Government to secure additional funding to ensure the games are a world-class success.

Despite the financial challenges, preparations for the 2026 SUKMA (Malaysia Games) are acting as a successful test run for the larger 2027 event. Host state Selangor has identified 27 core sports for the upcoming national competition, and many athletes are using these local games to qualify for the SEA Games roster. The government remains committed to using these events to boost the local economy and sports tourism.
