A 21-year-old university student has been arrested in Pahang after a video allegedly showing him stepping on a copy of the Quran went viral on social media. The incident reportedly took place in a dormitory room at a local university in Gambang. Following several police reports lodged by members of the public and student groups, authorities tracked down the suspect and took him into custody early this morning to facilitate investigations into the matter.
The police have classified the case under Section 298A of the Penal Code for causing disharmony on grounds of religion and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for the improper use of network facilities. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and refrain from making speculative comments that could further inflame religious sensitivities. The university management has also issued a statement confirming that they are cooperating fully with the police while initiating their own internal disciplinary proceedings against the student.
