Following the confirmed death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in U.S.-Israeli strikes, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced on Sunday the formation of a three-member interim leadership council. This council has already begun operations to maintain government stability while a permanent successor is chosen, a process that Iran's foreign minister suggested could be completed within days. Pezeshkian vowed that Iran’s armed forces remain ready to "smash" the bases of their enemies in retaliation for the strikes.
The situation in Tehran remains tense as reports also confirm the death of former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who was reportedly targeted and killed at his residence in eastern Tehran during the same wave of attacks. Several other senior figures, including the defense minister and the commander-in-chief of the IRGC, were also killed. In response, Hezbollah has promised to confront both the U.S. and Israel, launching rocket attacks that have prompted retaliatory Israeli bombings in Beirut.
International reactions have been swift, with the European Union calling for "utmost concern" and urging all parties to exercise maximum restraint to protect civilian lives. Regional neighbors like Cambodia and Indonesia have also expressed deep concern, with Indonesia closely monitoring nearly 59,000 pilgrims currently in Saudi Arabia whose travel plans have been disrupted by flight cancellations. The global community is bracing for further escalation as Iran vows revenge for its lost leadership.
