Following the recent narrow defeat of a bill intended to limit the Prime Minister’s tenure to 10 years, civil society organizations like Projek SAMA are urging the government to retable the legislation. The bill previously failed to secure the necessary two-thirds majority in Parliament, but advocates argue that the reform is essential for the long-term health of Malaysia’s democracy.

Supporters of the bill claim that a term limit would prevent the over-concentration of power and encourage fresh leadership within the government. They are calling on both the ruling coalition and the opposition to set aside partisan differences to support this constitutional amendment. Public debates on the issue have intensified, with many citizens expressing a desire for more transparent and accountable governance.

Parallel to this, other institutional reforms, such as the separation of the Attorney-General’s roles, are also gaining traction in parliamentary discussions. The government has indicated that it is open to further consultations with stakeholders to refine these bills before they are brought back for a second vote in the next legislative session.
