In a significant expansion of the ongoing conflict, a U.S. Navy submarine has reportedly destroyed an Iranian warship, the IRIS Dena, off the coast of Sri Lanka. This marks the first time since the start of the current hostilities that U.S. forces have targeted Iranian assets outside of the Middle East. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated the strike targeted a vessel that "thought it was safe in international waters," resulting in more than 80 casualties.

The IRIS Dena was reportedly returning to Iran after participating in a naval exercise hosted by India in the Bay of Bengal. This strike has raised international concerns about the war's potential to spill over into vital Indian Ocean shipping lanes, further complicating global maritime security. In response to the widening violence, an independent United Nations probe has condemned strikes by all parties involved, stating they constitute a breach of the UN Charter.

Regional tensions remain at an all-time high as Turkey reported its NATO defenses intercepted a ballistic missile launched from Iran on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, Nigeria, has issued a security alert and closed for routine business until March 9 due to potential violent protests. As the conflict enters its fifth day, global leaders are warning of "war price hikes" and severe disruptions to the international economy.
