The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project reached a major milestone today, March 17, 2026, as it officially entered its testing and commissioning phase. This transition follows the successful completion of the main 519km track alignment connecting Kota Bharu in Kelantan to Gombak in Selangor. As of February 2026, the project has achieved an overall construction progress of approximately 93%, keeping it strictly on schedule for commercial operations to begin in January 2027.

The arrival of the Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains marks the beginning of a rigorous 8,000km "Fault-Free Run" to ensure the safety and reliability of the system. This testing phase will evaluate the integration of key system installations, including electrification and signaling, along the completed stretch. Officials noted that the project's progress in states like Terengganu has been particularly rapid, contributing significantly to the early completion of this specific track alignment.

This infrastructure development is expected to transform regional logistics and travel, reducing the journey between Kota Bharu and Kuala Lumpur to approximately four hours. Once fully operational, the ECRL will serve as a green transportation mode for both passengers and cargo, spanning a total of 665km across four states. The final section from Gombak to Port Klang remains on track for completion by December 2027, eventually linking the East Coast directly to Malaysia’s premier maritime gateway.
