Early on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, a Russian Antonov-26 (An-26) military transport aircraft crashed into a cliff in the Crimea region. Russia's defence ministry confirmed that all 29 people on board, including 23 passengers and 6 crew members, were killed in the incident. Communication with the flight was reportedly lost around 6 p.m. local time on Tuesday during a planned flight, and rescue teams located the wreckage shortly after.

Preliminary assessments from the Russian defence ministry and state news agencies point toward a technical malfunction as the likely cause of the crash. The An-26 is a Soviet-era twin-engine turboprop widely used for logistics and personnel transport; however, aging airframes have been linked to several similar accidents in recent years. Search-and-rescue operations were quickly deployed to the mountainous terrain, but no survivors were found at the crash site.

This incident adds to a series of aviation challenges for Russian military assets in the region. While the ministry has not immediately provided further details, the Transportation Safety Board and military investigators are expected to conduct a thorough analysis of the flight recorders. The crash occurred amid ongoing regional tensions, though official statements currently maintain that technical failure, rather than external interference, was responsible for the tragedy.
