The Ministry of Education (MOE) has issued an immediate directive to all Institutes of Teacher Education (IPGs) across Malaysia to halt all extreme and water-based activities. This decision follows a tragic incident over the weekend where two students from the IPG Perlis Campus, Christopher Ling Jia Siang (21) and Joey Ling Lin Siang (20), drowned while kayaking at Pantai Merdeka in Sungai Petani, Kedah. Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh stated that the suspension is a necessary safety measure while internal investigations and police inquiries are finalized.
The ministry's internal probe will specifically examine the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for such outdoor activities to identify potential lapses in safety protocols. Wong highlighted that the MOE is providing full cooperation to the authorities to ensure a thorough investigation of the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. During a press conference in Ipoh, he emphasized that the safety of students remains the ministry's top priority, and no such activities will resume until new safety guidelines are established.
This incident has sparked a wider conversation regarding the risks associated with student-led recreational trips and the adequacy of existing supervision for water sports. The bodies of the two victims were recovered on Saturday evening, and the local community has expressed deep mourning over the loss of the two promising future educators. As the investigation continues, all scheduled kayaking and extreme sport events at educational institutions nationwide have been put on hold indefinitely.
