The United Nations and nations worldwide are observing the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. This solemn day marks the anniversary of the start of the 100 day genocide that claimed nearly one million lives. Commemorative events are being held in Kigali and at UN headquarters in New York to honor the victims and survivors.

UN Secretary General António Guterres issued a statement urging the global community to stand firm against hate speech and xenophobia, which he noted are on the rise globally. The theme of this year's remembrance focuses on the resilience of survivors and the ongoing journey of national reconciliation in Rwanda, which serves as a global model for post-conflict healing.

Educational programs and memorial services across various capitals are highlighting the importance of preventing such atrocities in the future. Human rights organizations are using the day to call for renewed international commitment to the "Responsibility to Protect" doctrine, ensuring that the lessons of 1994 remain a central part of global diplomatic and security policy.
